God desires a personal relationship with us, His creation. That which He made… that which He made from the dust of the earth, He calls His own! He views us as children and friends. He never needed us. But God does take great pleasure in us and He spends much time thinking about us.
“The Lord your God in your midst, the Might One, will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing.” Zephaniah 3:17 (NKJV)
“How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How great is the sum of them! If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand; When I awake, I am still with You.” Psalm 139:17-18 (NKJV)
The Bible tells us that God is love.
“He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.” 1 John 4:8 (NKJV)
Mankind understands love as an action, a feeling, or even a condition. But that is a limited view of love, of God. The Word says that while we are on earth, we see heavenly things with a blurred or partial vision. Our vision is impaired because we view them through a darkly smeared glass. We see and understand just enough to know God is present and that beauty awaits us in our eternal home.
“For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.” 1 Corinthians 13:12 (NKJV)
Because God desires a relationship with us, a creation bent on sinning, it certainly seems like He gets the short end of the stick. We are offered a relationship with the Creator of the universe. We are loved with an unconditional love. He calls us His children and an inheritance worthy of princes is His promise to us. With great affection and love, He watches over our lives. He does not need us… but He wants us. Amazing!
The Bible tells us that God is a jealous God, but because God is perfect and without sin, His jealousy is righteous and pure. It is not tainted with human sin. This use of jealousy is used of God as not bearing any rival. In other words, we should have no idols. Nothing should come before our love for God. He wants our focus to be on Him continuously.
“For you shall worship no other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.” Exodus 34:14 (NKJV)
“For the Lord your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.” Deuteronomy 4:24 (NKJV)
Human jealousy is sinful because its focus is warped with an exaggerated focus on someone or something other than God. If we have a love of money and wealth, we sin because we put our faith in riches rather than an all-powerful God. If we have a jealous love for another, we view them as our possession. A jealous love for another damages and wounds the one we supposedly love. It is birthed out of insecurity and control. Jesus died to set us free from bondage. A jealous love for another is bondage, for both people.
When we think of God’s love for us, we should remember that His jealous love comes from a desire to have a personal relationship with us. And unlike human jealousy, His vigilant desire for us is filled with unconditional love. He is worthy of our attention but He does not force or guilt us into submission. He opens wide His arms but waits for us to visit and spend time with Him. He has an intense positive interest in us and we should certainly reciprocate.
Are you abiding in Christ? To abide means to endure, remain, continue, dwell, persist, linger, inhabit, digest, bear with, hang out, submit, perpetual, nest, and adhere to… continually. If you are not abiding in Him, ask yourself why not? The most amazing lover of your soul desires your attention. He is perfect. Who does not want to “hang out” with perfection?
“If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love.” John 15:10 (NKJV)
“He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.” 1 John 2:6 (NKJV)
“Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in Me.” John 15:4 (NIV)
