The Bible declares in Matthew 27:17, “Therefore when they were gathered together, Pilate said unto them, Whom will ye that I release unto you? Barabbas, or Jesus which is called Christ?”
A little over 2000 years ago, Pilate presented a matter, a decision that was to be made, before the people; Barabbas or Jesus? You see this is a question in which the world is constantly presenting before the believer of today. Barabbas’ first name was Jesus, as given in some interpretations of the Bible i.e New Revised Standard Version. Barabbas in itself as a surname, comes from Bar Abba, which means “son of the father.” So the people where given the choice between Christ the messiah, and a type of Christ: And we find how that in this day and age the Church is settling for a type of Christ disregarding The Christ of our salvation.
Jesus was an innocent man about to be murdered but Barabbas was a murderer about to be dealt with as though innocent. Many times, within our hearts, as we flock from church to church, we know that we are settling for the popular type of Christ. We know we are seeking what gratifies the flesh and satisfies our itching ears. We shun out the preacher who came to preach repentance because we simply do not want to live right. But this morning, I have come with an age-old question, that needs urgently to be adressed before the sounding of the last trumpet; Whom will ye that I release unto you as a preacher man this morning? Barabbas, or Jesus?
